China's September Car Retail Sales Fall 24% to 1.702 Million, While BYD Grows 17% on Exports

China's September Car Retail Sales Fall 24% to 1.702 Million, While BYD Grows 17% on Exports

China's car market had a weak September 2026. Preliminary figures put passenger car retail sales at 1.702 million, down 24% year on year but up 10% from August. Against that backdrop, BYD sold 463,561 new energy vehicles (NEVs), up 17%, and exports of 180,700 did much of the work.

China passenger car market, September 2026

Measure September 2026 Year on year
Retail sales 1.702 million -24%
NEV retail sales 1.141 million -12%
NEV share of retail 67.1% -
Wholesale (factory shipments) 2.528 million -10%
NEV wholesale 1.672 million +11%
Retail, January to September 13.418 million -21%

The comparison is a tough one. September 2025 set a retail record, as buyers rushed to purchase before trade-in subsidies stopped in some regions. This year, a strong final week, with about 148,000 retail sales a day, narrowed the fall.

Petrol cars take the hardest hit

Growth this September came almost entirely from NEVs, which took two in every three retail sales. Wholesale shipments of petrol cars fell 41% year on year. Cumulative petrol price rises this year have passed CN¥830 per tonne, which has cooled demand for petrol models further, while dealers face growing operating pressure even with low stock levels.

BYD: growth from exports

BYD, September 2026 Units Year on year
Total NEV sales 463,561 +17%
Exports 180,700 +154%
Sales in China (total minus exports) 282,861 -13%
January to September total 3,131,576 -3.94%

Exports made up 39% of BYD's September total, up from 18% a year earlier, although exports were 4.6% below August's record of 189,466. Even so, September was BYD's best month of 2026 so far, although its sales at home fell and its year-to-date total is still slightly behind last year.

What it means for car buyers in China

1Tax: NEV purchase tax has been charged at 5% since January, with relief capped at CN¥15,000, and it returns to the full 10% in January 2028. Factor it into your on-road price.
2Offers: local consumption incentives and carmaker promotions are still running in many places, so check what applies in your city.
3Negotiation: with retail sales down and dealers under pressure, get written quotes from more than one dealer before you commit.

Bottom line

China's car market is shrinking at home, NEVs now dominate what is left, and the biggest brand is leaning on exports to grow. For the full brand breakdown, see our BYD September 2026 brand breakdown, look back at China's NEV share in August, and follow the CarVoltX blog for more market news.
